PURPOSE – That no DC should ever be lost from the profession simply due to lack of knowledge or guidance.

OBJECTIVE – To direct and assist a doctor to open his or her new chiropractic practice BIG, and be in the black from month one upon opening! Also to lay the foundation upon which will be built a self-sustaining referral practice for decades to come!

WHY RS? – Ever ponder the following sobering stats?... Why does only approximately 10% of any graduating class from any chiropractic school become truly successful in practice? Why does chiropractic lead all health professions in student loan default rates?

There are at least a few arguable reasons behind these realities, but one thing is undeniable… 100s of DCs fail in practice every year! And some never get the chance to try to make it in practice, because they never even open their own doors!

Why so great a number of failures? Again, the reasons may be many, not the least of which is this… our Chiropractic Universities (“Health Sciences” Universities for some) may do well to prepare students to learn the basics of technique, to diagnose, and to pass board exams, but by and large do not train the student for life in a real practice after graduation.

“But what about practice management courses offered by most schools?” you might ask. Knowing the way is not going the way. In other words, there is a vast difference between book knowledge on how to fly an airplane, and climbing into the cockpit yourself to actually fly.

Bottom Line? Too many of our colleagues are going down! As a profession, chiropractic care does more good for mankind than any other profession, and frankly chiropractors deserve to be successful!

Where’s the missing link? Know this, once a student graduates with DC diploma in hand, the real education is just beginning. Formal education is required to clear the obstacles and get that diploma and license to practice. Additional education is required now to learn how to run a successful practice.

It’s simple, without the right information and concepts, practice tends to be an uphill struggle. With the right information, concepts, and mentoring guidance, many of the obstacles that would otherwise “take out” the unaware doctor, are avoided. The question is “why swim upstream and risk trying to figure it out on your own when you can have expert guidance instead?” That being said, be careful in your choice of who you receive that guidance from! Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan each have or had a coach, but not just ANY coach, because coach’s come a dime a dozen. These men have or had the best coach to be the best in their fields. Chiropractic is no different.

WHO IS RS? – The concept of Right Start began almost 50 years ago out of the passion of Dr. Tom Owen. Dr. Owen attributes most of his concepts of success to his associateship right out of Palmer with Dr. Bert Boutwell. Dr. Boutwell is the nephew of Dr. Bill Harris, who to this day, in his 80s, is still one of the most benevolent contributors to the chiropractic profession. Concepts of success were learned early by Dr. Owen, and upon opening his first practice in 1957, he hired his first associate by his 2nd month, opened his 2nd office in his 4th month, and opened his 3rd office within his 6th month. Before long, Dr. Owen was opening multiple clinics, and training his colleagues how to run them with great success. He began coaching other chiropractors in their own offices, and in 1973, was honored with a Fellowship from Palmer College after he had literally saved 42 of their graduates from failing in practice and/or quitting the profession. Since then, the number of doctors saved from the brink of failure has grown well into the 1000s.

Dr. Owen’s son, Tom, was raised in this environment, and literally grew up in his father’s footsteps. Tom has been mentored and influenced by his father, and by some of the “Greats” whom his father knew, such as C. Gonstead, N. Hill, C. Stone, R. Sweat, J. Charbennau, T. Sloan, J. Revels, and the list goes on… Tom is now the President of AMC, and has amassed over 20 years of experience and wisdom “on the scene and in the trenches” of opening and running successful offices. He possesses a huge heart for chiropractors, but also a sharp, dynamic business mind second to none in the chiropractic profession. These attributes make a powerful resource for our Right Start doctors.

Under the guidance of Dr. Owen and Tom Owen, AMC Right Start is administered by a hand-picked team of directors and coaches. The #1 quality of each is his or her tremendous heart for chiropractic and for our fellow chiropractors. Their sole purpose is to insure the longevity of chiropractic by guiding a new doctor (or student, or doctor in practice looking for a new start) through all the steps necessary to open the doors of their new practice, and to open BIG! Every new practice opened by a chiropractor, properly trained and motivated, should open in the black from their very first month! Each director and coach is also a chiropractor currently in practice, so be assured they know first hand what works, what doesn’t work, and are not just spouting off theories and “maybes”.

WHAT DOES RIGHT START INCLUDE? - As a doctor or student looking to the future of your own chiropractic practice, what challenges and opportunities will need to be addressed? What's the significance of the torch logo?

Like the passing of the flame of the Olympic torch, so is the passing on of wisdom, experience, and knowledge from those who have gone before them, having successfully opened and operated successful chiropractic practices. Two, the way to dispel darkness is with light, so the light of the flame represents the illumination of dangerous obstacles and uncertainty, and a clearing of confusion in the journey to start a practice the right way.
